Bruce Dayton announces 2 new nature walks

From Beach to Lagoon

Mondays: Jan.18 and Feb.15

Free nature walk from the Gulf shore to a lagoon off Lemon Bay led by ecologist Bruce Dayton at Blind Pass Beach. We discuss how water, wind, sand and living things interact to create our beautiful barrier islands (keys as we call them). The biological emphasis will be on habitats. Included are beach, dune, coastal hammock and mangrove. It is a fairly easy two hour stroll on beach, boardwalk, and a short trail. We will meet at 9am by the Blind Pass sign across from the parking area. Approximate time is two hours. Walk is given under the auspices of Sarasota Parks and Recreation. Regstration is required and is limited to 15 participants. Call 941-650-2487 or 493 5087 to register.

Siesta Key - Beach Access #2, Avenida Messina

At Beach Accesses # 2 & # 3, there is no place to park.
The road bordering the beach is PRIVATE and partially sand-covered.
There was once a fishing pier or bulwark here
which the waves have destroyed.

Some people still venture out to the end with fishing poles.
They say that all kinds of fish can be caught here,
but it looks dangerous.

Park at Access #3, further south, and walk here.
There is always something interesting to see, such as the snowy egret below.

Bradenton Beach public beaches

There are almost 2 miles of public beach to enjoy along Gulf Drive on the southern tip of Anna Maria Island. Bike paths and lots of public parking are available. Jetties are spaced along the shoreline, most in disrepair, but still intact. (Walking/fishing is not allowed on any of them.) There were lots of shells and birds on this lovely Fall day.

East end of Bird Key Park

Steep slope down to water.
The boulders placed to prevent erosion...didn't.

At high tide, they make it difficult to wade in the water.

"Access Point"
This means a break in the concrete blocks along the slope down to water.

Present parking. This photo was taken on a windy day at high tide.
On better days,
when people could get in the water,
the parking lot could be filled.
